YNAG JIANG
Yang Jiang, born in Wu Xi of China’s Jiangsu Province on July 17, 1911, is China’s famous translator, writer, and playwright. In 1932, she was married Qian Zhongshu (1910-1998) who is one of the greatest literature scholars of China. Their only child, a daughter named Qian Yuan, was born in Oxford during they learnt abroad. Yang Jiang has published a plenty of working such as Six Chapters from a Cadre School, Baptism, and We three and so on. As a centenary and multicultural writer, she is not only influencing the intellectuals of China but also for educator communicated the literature between East and West.
Yang Jiang was educated in a missionary school in Shanghai and Suzhou and graduated from Soochow University in1932. And then, she enrolled to Tsinghua which is one of the most prestigious Universities in China. During that time, she met her husband Qian Zhongshu who is a famous scholar. From 1935-1937, after they graduated from Tsinghua University, she accompanied her husband studied in the UK and France. In 1938, they brought their child Qian Yuan who was born in Oxford University returned to China, she taught in Shanghai Fudan Liberal Arts College and Tsinghua University. From 1949, she was starting worked in the Institute of Literature of Chinese Academy of Social Science ( CASS). In 1952, they joined New Institute of Chinese Literature of Chinese Academy of Sciences, as senior researchers. During their years at the Insitute, Yang Jiang translated the two of the subjects which are: Gil Blas from the French and Don Quixote from the Spanish.
At the time of culture revolution (1966-1976), like most literature, they were sent to the countryside for "re-education" more than once. Yang Jiang was written several memoirs of that days. One of the most famous was Six Chapters from a Cadre School. Qian Yuan, the cupel's only child died in 1997, then her husband died in 1998. After their died, Yang Jiang immersed herself in her translation of Plato's Phaedo, and before the working was finished in 1999, her only novel Baptism which was published in 1987. |
In 2003, her We Three was published which was a memoir of her family members lives together. At the age of 96, she released a book name of Walk to the Edge of Life, which was influenced hundred and thousand of the reader to deeply think about their life. So far 2015, she is a centenary older, she still consists thinking and reading every day. " I was the same person I had always been," as she said in her writing of Six Chapters from a Cadre School, she only be herself.

Yang Jiang is worthy of respected by everyone, it is not only because her contribution in literature can be a way to review the history of China, but she devoted herself to improve the literary of China. She always cares about contribute herself to literature, also, she hopes to raise students to rich their knowledge. So, she has donated all of her money to help students for founded the Reading Association of T-singhua University.
Her experience of strive for her dream of literature has already influenced many people. For me, Yang's work and her story have to be a textbook of mine, which guide me how to be a good women, wife and how to treat my dream.
