DR HAWA ABDI |
Dr Xawo Cabdi ( Hawo Abdi ) she is physician, activist . she is the founder and chairperson of the Dr Hawa Abdi Foundation (DHAF) a non-profit organization.
She was born in Mogadishu the capital of Somalia the year 1947. She finished her elementary, intermediate and secondary academic in Somali. She got scholarship in 1964 and studied medicine at kiev institution graduating in 1971 at the following year she started her law studies at Somali national university. She worked her medical professional in the morning and later in the afternoon attended her law classes. She eventually earned her law in 1979. Career and contribution :In 1983 Dr hawa opened Rural Health Development organization. When she open it was only one-room clinic offering free service. During the early 1990s when Somali civil war broke Dr hawa remained behind to help and assist her professional to those who need her service, She subsequently established a new clinic and school for the displaced and orphans .
In 2011 drought in Somali she opened a relief camp a housed of 90,000 people on the 1,300 acres surrounding Dr Hawo hospital.. DHAF is ruined Dr hawo and her two daughters who fellow her footsteps . The organization has a multinational staff of 102 workers, augmented by a 150-member team comprising volunteers, fishermen and farmers . DHAF compound includes hospital, school nutritional center and offers free shelter for women and children. Since the 1980s she helped estimate 2 million people. Although her she offers free charge services she owns several lands where vegetables and maize are grown and later in part sold to cover some of the facility's and staff costs, she also operates several fishing and agricultural project within the compound for maintains to continue her free service to those who need .. since 2011 her organization gets help from the Women in the World Foundation . Obstacles :She grow up without mother, her mother died when she was 12 years old as she was the eldest in her family .
Two years prior, at the height of the Islamic militants in southern and central Somalia. The militants had offensive operations to the compound and tried to force her foundation to shut it down her operation. She stood her ground and fought the militants and they left within a few weeks. But the Islamic militant’s captured the area in February 2012 which suspended her operation till their departure . Awards :In 2014, Abdi received the Roosevelt Four Freedoms Award : Freedom from Want in Middelburg, the Netherlands .
In 2007, Abdi was named Hiiraan Online's Person of the Year. Glamour magazine later named her and her two daughters among its 2010 "Women of the Year" . In 2012, Abdi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She also received the Women of Impact Award from the WITW Foundation, BET's Social Humanitarian Award , and the John Jay Medal for Justice.
